Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 cup of granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of peppermint extract
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour

  • Red and green food coloring (for coloring)
  • 1/2 cup of crushed candy canes

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add the vanilla extract and peppermint extract, mixing until well combined.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder.
  • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  • Divide the dough into two portions. In one portion, add red food coloring and mix until you achieve the desired color. In the other portion, add green food coloring.
  • Roll pieces of each color of dough into long ropes, about 6 inches long.
  • Twist one red rope and one green rope together, then shape it into a candy cane curve.
  • Place the shaped cookies onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Sprinkle crushed candy canes on top of each cookie.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
